our techniques

Skill, meet experience

At Creative Cabinet Designs, we recommend the practical beauty of dovetail joints for all our cabinet drawers and other fine furniture designs. Here are the amazing benefits of this time-tested technique:

  1. Strength: Dovetail joints are very strong and resistant to forces that try to pull the joint apart, such as those that occur when a drawer is pulled out. The fingers of the joint are specially crafted to pull along the grain of the wood, where it’s strongest.

  2. Elegance: Dovetail joints are visually appealing and add a level of craftsmanship and attention to detail to your beautiful custom cabinets or handmade furniture.

  3. Durability: Dovetail joints are able to hold up well over time, meaning that your new built-in cabinet drawers, kitchen island or media center made with dovetail joints will likely last for many years.

  4. Skill: While dovetail joints can be time-consuming to create, they visually demonstrate the care and skill we put into all our cabinets and furniture.

We’ve been recommending  and building Shaker cabinets, millwork and furniture for over 20 years. The recent resurgence in popularity is evidence of their classic design.

Shaker cabinets are characterized by their clean lines and minimal ornamentation, which gives them a timeless and understated look. They can easily blend in with a variety of design styles, from traditional to contemporary, and their simple design makes them easy to pair with a wide range of hardware and other design elements. At Creative Cabinet Designs, we’ll customize everything for your individual taste and budget, helping you choose the best techniques and styles for your specific project.

Making the cabinet box out of solid wood is impractical for most sizes due to moisture deformation and the scarce availability of stock wider than one foot. Fortunately, plywood was invented to overcome these concerns. It doesn’t warp, can be made in large sheets, and is actually much stronger than most hardwoods of the same thickness, especially where the grain is weakest.

Don’t settle for fake plywoods, either. While certain budget cabinets use 1/2″ or even 3/8″ plywood—or worse, particle board or MDF that have a fake veneer—we use only high-grade 3/4″ plywood, yielding a cabinet that will stay strong and look great for many decades. The amazing part is that since we build locally here in the New River Valley, you’re not wasting money to ship bulky cabinets across the country or importing them from overseas.

Finish carpentry or trim carpentry, sometimes referred to as “millwork,” refers to the skilled craft of installing and creating finishing touches to cabinetry and walls, typically in the final stages of your remodeling project. This highly skilled process involves the installation of decorative elements such as moldings, trim, wainscoting, built-in cabinetry, and other finishing touches that give a space its final look and feel.

Finish carpentry requires a high degree of precision, attention to detail, and specialized tools and techniques. It often involves working with delicate materials such as hardwoods and decorative moldings, and requires a thorough understanding of design principles and construction techniques. It’s one of our favorite aspects of each project because it allows our craftsmen to showcase their artistic precision and creativity.

Some examples of finish carpentry projects include the installation of crown molding along the ceiling or baseboards along the floor, the construction and installation of custom cabinetry and built-in shelving, and the creation of decorative paneling or wainscoting along the walls.

At Creative Cabinet Designs, we use finish carpentry to bring the polished, professional look to each job. Finish carpentry is an important aspect of construction that focuses on the final touches that make a building or space feel complete and polished.
